HOW CAN HYPNOSIS HELP WITH PAIN?

Researchers estimate that chronic pain affects more than 1.5 billion people globally*.  Hypnosis for pain, also known as Hypno-analgesia, is proven to decrease acute and chronic pain in most individuals. This provides a medication and side-effect free form of support for people struggling to manage their pain.

Medical hypnosis has helped many people with both acute (sudden) and chronic (long-term) pain. This includes those who are coping with cancer and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as those who have suffered burns. Hypnosis can also be a useful tool to ease anxiety before surgery or procedures.

Our minds and bodies are intrinsically linked and the state of one affects the other. Stress and anxiety are a common side effect of pain and can escalate the sensation because the way the mind responds to pain also links to the perception of physical sensations. Helping to reduce stress and alter the thought patterns related to pain can make a big impact on pain perception and ultimately the physical feeling.

HOW DOES HYPNOSIS TO MANAGE PAIN WORK?

There are 4 main strategies used in hypnosis for pain control, these are;

  • Distraction

  • Re-framing

  • Dissociation

  • Numbing

During your sessions with your therapist, you will experience a guided relaxation which will help you to let go of any distracting thoughts. This temporarily quiets the conscious part of your mind, opening up your subconscious to the power of suggestion.

Hypnosis for pain management doesn’t aim to convince your brain that your pain doesn’t exist, rather it helps you manage any fear or anxiety you may be experiencing in relation to your pain. It can also help reduce stress and relax the nervous system which helps it become less reactive to pain.

Pain is a signal that something in our body requires attention. It is vital that when you are considering pain management, you should be fully checked by your GP before starting a course of hypnotherapy.
