WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CONFIDENCE AND SELF-ESTEEM?

Many people think confidence and self-esteem are one and the same, but they are actually two quite different concepts.

  • Having good self-confidence means you believe you can achieve your goals. You have trust in your abilities and you’re willing to take on a challenge. This is specific to your skill set so you may be confident in one area but not another.

  • Having bad self-confidence means you are uncertain of your abilities and you doubt your competence to achieve your goals.

  • Having good self-esteem means you believe you are worthy and valuable. You look after your health and wellbeing and you are very resilient because you don’t let setbacks or failures affect how you see yourself.

  • Having bad self-esteem means you don’t believe you are worthy which can lead to the use of negative coping skills like using drugs, alcohol and sex for validation.

WHAT CAUSES LOW SELF-CONFIDENCE?

There are many reasons we can have low self-confidence, past experiences and upbringing can be a factor, as well as our thinking styles and belief systems. Our day to day lives and experiences and relationships all contribute to our confidence levels. Experiences of embarrassment, perceived failure or negative feedback from our peers can negatively affect our belief that we can achieve our goals, but more importantly, the way we process these things has the biggest impact on our confidence. Low self-confidence is really common and it can be detrimental to your life if it results in some or all of these effects:

  • Being overly sensitive to criticism

  • Feeling low or depressed

  • Lack of motivation

  • Inability to assert yourself

  • Overly critical and negative self talk

  • Feeling like your life is a failure

“Confidence is a lot of this game or any game. If you don’t think you can, you won’t”
— Jerry West

WHAT CAUSES LOW SELF ESTEEM?

Self-esteem presents itself on a scale, some of us have an abundance, while others might struggle with low self-esteem. People with low self-esteem tend to feel a constant feeling of little to no self-worth. They’re likely to experience any, several or all of the following feelings:

  • A fear of failure

  • Fear of other people's opinions

  • Fear of criticism

  • Assuming others are better than oneself

  • Avoiding social gatherings and events

  • Giving reasons for your actions

  • Responding harshly to criticism

  • Seeking people's approval

  • Judging yourself by what other people say

  • Inability to make decisions for oneself

  • Panicking and becoming overwhelmed by life decisions

“Self-confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings.”
— Samuel Johnson

HOW CAN HYPNOSIS HELP WITH CONFIDENCE & SELF ESTEEM

A lack of self-confidence and/or low self-esteem can hold us back from developing both personally and professionally. However, it is largely down to your state of mind, which means it’s temporary, not permanent.  With the right help, it can change and you can adopt coping skills to prevent it from happening again in the future. Hypnosis can give you the power to make the shift in mindset, it can help alter belief systems and train your mind to process events in your life in a more positive way. Hypnotherapy has the power to tap into your subconscious to bring out traits that you already possess, but have been overridden with negative thoughts.
