WHERE DOES FEAR OF FLYING COME FROM?

The fear of flying is like any other fear; created in the mind. It is very common and affects around 1 in 10 people in the UK*. Our conscious mind knows that flying is statistically the safest form of transport and yet our subconscious mind is anxious about factors like being suspended at 31,000 feet in the air, with no control over what happens. The fear of flying can stem from issues with control, feeling trapped and/or putting the trust of your safety in others.

SYMPTOMS OF FEAR OF FLYING

  • High levels of anticipatory anxiety leading up to a flight

  • Avoiding flying where possible

  • Physical symptoms such as heavy breathing, rapid heart rate, nausea and sickness, sweating and dizziness before or during a flight

  • Picturing catastrophic scenes before or during a flight which cause you distress

  • Worrying that you may lose control on a flight and do something drastic like open a door

As with most phobias, the fear of flying does make some sense, but if ever there was a fear worth quashing then this is it. After all, life is short, and there’s a great big world to explore out there.
